Do recent Macs read 800K discs?

No. The last mac that can read them was the beige G3, which also happens to be the oldest model to run Mac OS X.

Also, will software for 68K Macs run on recent machines without an
emulator?

The 68k emulator has been built in the operating system since Apple switched to power pc processors. Most 68k programs are compatible with that inbuilt emulator, some not, especially some of the really old ones. There exists a program that allows you to use really old stuff. Don't remember how it is called though.

(I still have and sometimes use a Mac Plus, but I've a PC user for the past decade. I'm thinking
of going back to Apple, however...)

Good for you. The Dark Lord is contemplating an assault on both Google and iTunes. We need all the help we can get.
