I have a Mac SE with a DaynaPort E/SE installed. It's running System 7.5.5 and MacTCP 2.0.6. I would like to get this connected to a Linksys WRT54G router using a wired connection.
Now, the WRT54G doesn't support bootp, and as far as I'm aware MacTCP doesn't support DHCP. I can't install OpenTransport, as I'm not running a machine with an '30 chip in it.
I would have thought the correct way to go about this would be to set MacTCP to obtain an address manually, set C as the class, set an IP address and set the gateway address as that of the router. Not too bothered about DNS at present - just simple IP-based LAN communication would be a start.
I've done this - in my case, 192.168.1.50 as the IP (tried others as well), 192.168.1.1 as the gateway, all DNS fields clear, no other options touched. The result? Nothing. Nada. No connection whatsoever, and also if I look at my router the LEDs for the wired connection haven't come on. However, plugging the cable into the SE's adapter causes the adapter to start regularly pulsing a green light, so I'm assuming the adapter is working. In addition, the hardware and software diagnostics supplied for that adapter all say everything is fine.
It sounds like you have been reading well, Ian. Your comments on the limitations of MacTCP are correct, to the best of my knowledge. When you enter the addresses for static IP etc, did you click on the icon in the right hand side of the MacTCP control panel dialog? The icon on the left opens the settings panel for MacIP; the one on the right is for the "real" ethernet interface which is what you need. Have you confirmed that AppleTalk (ie connecting to an AppleShare server/peer-to-peer volume) works over the ethernet interface? The lights may be blinking when there is a hardware ethernet connection but are the OS drivers working?
