At any rate, we should be happy with what Apple has given us.  Very
few companies are this generous.

This is true. The availability of System 6 in multiple manifestations means that Apple can say that they support (in the sense that they still provide system software) Macintosh hardware back to 1986.


That is great, but it is just one step away from cool--that's what's so frustrating about it--with just one more download, System 3.2/Finder 5.1 (June 1986) [or perhaps the System 2.0/Finder 4.1 release (April 1985) that Stuart mentions in his letter, or, better yet, both], Apple could say they support Macintosh hardware all the way back to 1984!
