Mike, sorry, I cannot remember your original post, but did you try to start from your internal with extensions off (hold the shift key while starting up) or boot into the Extensions Manager (hold space bar while starting up; not sure if this works on the old system you're probably using on the HD) and remove the offending extensions? This would be a simple way to deal with the problem. HD size is ok, no issue. Do you have another Mac you could test the 6.0.8 boot floppy on? 800k, I think?
As previously mention I installed a few things prior to getting the 'not enough memory' on boot error, and I just planned to boot off a floppy and remove the offending items. Thing is when I boot with the floppy I get a 'There isn't enough Finder memory to work with the disk "Hard Disk"", error. I have 4 MB of ram and the largest unused block size it 2,875, not sure what could be the issue here. The Hard Disk is a 250MB unit (not sure what size OS7.1 sees it as) I would not have thought that would be a problem.
A little stuck (once more!) if I cannot see the disk, it makes a fix a little tricky !
Re-reading your post makes me think you have 7.1 on the HD and after working fine and eating up more than a quarter of your RAM :-) it ended up showing you a "not enough memory" error, just as the system from the floppy did later on. This reeks of something more fundamental than just some INITs gone astray. What if some of your RAM had lost contact? Just a thought; but a no-frills 6.0.8 would work in a 1 MB situation, too. Indeed, a tricky one. No external to boot from?
In order to identify the culprit, if you are able to get to the innards of the SE, you could take the SCSI cable off the internal and see if your machine boots from the floppy then. Just take care not to kill the tube (see Ian's thread) and keep away from the red suction cup for 24 hours after last trying to fire the machine up and you're safe. Keep us posted!
Good luck, cheers, OM --
