About a week and a half ago, a friend called me saying that his dad had picked up an Apple computer at an auction (among many other things) and wanted to know if I wanted it. His father has "sold" me several items in the past, and I've always been happy with the arrangement. I go to his storage locker, pick out the "junk" I can use, and offer to pay him for it. His response is usually something like "heck, this is the first time I can walk to the back of this shed in months! I should pay you!" At which time I leave, and go my friend's house and give him a fair amount of money to donate to his Church for the children's fund.
Anyhow, back on topic (sorry, Stuart). This Apple I picked up is a Mac Plus with the Grey case. When I first looked at it, I thought "well, hopefully there's something else in this pile I can use." because it was so filthy, I didn't even want it in the cab of my work truck. I got it home and took the hose to it (after trying to wipe it clean with a few rags), and the case itself is probably the least faded one I've ever seen. The only discoloring at all is the back, and it's in better shape than the best side of my second best looking Plus. I may have to go back and get an external floppy drive from him, and actually use this Plus. It's far too pretty to sit with the "common folk" Plusses I have in the basement :) Of course, I'll have to upgrade the RAM to the full 4M (I think it has 2.5 in it now) So, a few questions. The 800k (I assume) external drives this gentleman has have a part number like A1M1234 (I want to say 0109) , instead of the usual Mac number like M1234. I assume these drives are for both Apple II(gs) and Mac. Is it safe to assume these drives will work on a Mac Plus? I've never used an external floppy drive before, and want to make sure I don't fry the floppy controller. Will System 6.0.8 fit on one floppy, so I can use one drive for the system and one for applications? It's doubtful I would need any additional drivers, etc., for this machine. It would probably be used mostly for old games and such. If not, what system would? ISTR a thread in the last week or so that said 6.0.3 would. And here's the real odd ball question: Assuming I could find enough games to do this, does a keyboard have to be hooked up to this machine? I think it would be neat if I could have this machine hooked up with a mouse attached to it, the external floppy drive tucked behind it (with its System disk inserted), and just use it to play old games. If a keyboard is required, would just the 10 key keyboard suffice, or do I need a real keyboard? I think it would be pretty cool (wow, am I a geek!) to have a machine set up to play card games etc, without the keyboard. Thanks, J White -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
