From: "Matt Jordan" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > I have recently begun to build an archive of old software for the Macs and began to wonder about this topic as well. Not just "how long will this Mac last" but more importantly: "How long will we care about them?"
Those who fell in love with them may care until they pass on. Students of micro computers, hardware and programing, may study the turning point ones for some years to come. Computer historians will be devoted to their care and preservation in museums for as long as society keeps up museums and revisionists don't seek to rewrite computer history via the destruction of the evidence. Collectors will pay dearly and care for them as long as they hold some kind of value to the collectors. The archive of software should be of value to programers, historians and collectors for many years to come. > Although Apple has done us a great service by making Mac OS X talk to the compacts via AppleTalk and maintaining a layer of compatitbility OS X is quickly taking over and the companies that were once writing 68k software (even new software) are moving on. I can't blame any of them in the least but it still seems scary that maybe the community surrounding the compacts will begin to dissappear. Such words have been spoken and will be spoken again by those who become comfortable and prefer certain elements of the culture they grew up with as new generations become comfortable and prefer newer elements that replace or eliminate their need. To make available what we have learned until now to generations to come. -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
