I have removed the former AppleTalk extension from the Control
Panels folder. Then I have downloaded and installed AppleShare
Workstation 3.6.5. Now, when I try to enable AppleTalk in the
Chooser, I get an "AppleTalk cannot be opened" message, and it
doesn't activate. I understand that AppleShare Workstation is
*only* a file sharing extension, and it doesn't include AppleTalk,
so I need to locate and install it. The problem is that I do dont have the install disks for the system version I'm running (7.6.1).
Where can I locate the AppleTalk CDEV for my System version? Would
the System 7.5.x version work without problem? Is there a
possibility of downloading that single file, or a smaller set of
files than the whole System 7.5 installer?
Didn't work? Sorry bout that.
Currently installing 7.6.1. Ok, appletalk control panel is version 1.1 as it should be as part of OT 1.1.1, Appleshare extension is version 3.6.4, Opentransport version 1.1.1 installed with the standard install. Copying the Network control panel accross from the cd extras folder of a 7.5 install I'm told that classic networking is not supported on this mac so OT is installed and in use.
Hmmm, got to love apple installers.
No real choice to customize the install in parts or remove parts, no general custom install either so I'm stuck with OT.
I can send you Appleshare 3.6.4 from the utilities folder of the install disk, again this is only a extension to provide the appleshare icon in the the chooser, rather than providing you with appletalk and the needed parts to allow the classic to share (filesharing, user & groups, ect) and should work with either OT or classic network.
You might try the network control panel from 7.5.x as mentioned above or the appleshare 3.6.4 ext, I can post both to check your options before falling back to Open Transport as a last resort on a 10mb mac.
Good luck, I'll check some other machines after work, in general a mac with a low ram ceiling rarely goes past 7.1, here. :(
