It was a pain and I am told that what I did wasn't really necessary but. . .

I have a shell script that uses the mount_afp command line tool. It accepts an
AppleTalk over Ethernet address for a an OS 7.x box with file sharing started and
users and groups defined. An AppleScript wrapper in the startup items mounts my
classic disks each time I log in to Aqua. I am unable to connect to OS neXt from the
SE/30 except through ftp.

man mount; man mount_afp, from Terminal for more.

If you're thinking Linux is "less than" I do that with ftp and ftpd. curl is worth
learning about for X and Linux. An earlier version of Interarchy or Anarchy for OS 7.
Netpresenz for OS 7 is also around.

Getting off topic I think. Ask offline if you want some sample scripts.
