The problem is that the Apple II's ProDOS isn't as flexible as MacOS, and can't be upgraded with the same ease. ProDOS can only "talk" to drives newer than the original 5.25" one if there is a matching SmartPort driver in the disk controller's ROM. Of course, it would be possible to dump the ROM from a SuperDrive controller card, burn it in a 27xx EPROM chip and put it and the SWIM chip in a UniDisk controller card to make it compatible with the SuperDrive - but I don't know if it's that easy. Earlier controller cards (the Disk II card and the Apple Disk I/O card provided with the DuoDisk) can not be ugraded this way, because they aren't based on the IWM chip (in fact, the IWM is a one-chip version of these cards with some additions to interface a 3.5" drive). We should be talking of this in the Apple II list, but... it's down again... :-( Greetings, Antonio Rodrguez (Grijan) <ftp://grijan.cjb.net:21000/> -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
