Peter- I had the same problem. HFSUtils seems to work okay, but you it doesn't transfer all of the HFS labels when copying from a non-HFS disk. There is a utility called Bunch Typer that you can get from here:
http://www.itd.umich.edu/admin-hotline/Compressed_Bunch_Typer.sea.bin I realize that you may not be able to get it to run... Do you have a network adapter in the CC? Because you can download the NCSA Telnet client which also has an FTP client/server. I had a little luck getting that to work when turning on MacBinary. If you still can't get it to work let me know and I will send you a disk with Bunch Typer on it, and you should be all set, or I can dd it for you and email the image...
