This is a very common problem with the all-in-one compact macs. First, the fact that you have a bright anything means that the high-voltage circuit is just fine (i.e., the flyback transformer is almost certainly ok). The lack of horizontal deflection is the clue: Check the four-pin connector that goes from the "yoke" (the assembly around the neck of the crt) to the analog board. Inspect for signs of charring at any of the mating surfaces. And resolder (with fresh solder; don't simply reheat) all four connections on the analog board. This will fix 99% of the "bright vertical line" problems. The diagnosis becomes even more certain if whacking the mac occasionally brings the raster back. -- Prof. Thomas H.
