My experience so far has been that, yes, Salvation
Army chrages more for computers than any other thrift
store. They had a V-Tech educational system (one of
those proprietary OS machines, rather akin to
DreamWriters or AlphaSMarts) marked at $89; new, it
sold for $75! A few years back, I worked part time at
a thrift store in my hometown of Jacksonville, FL,
just a little job to get me through my divorce. The
manager had me handle the home electronics and
computers. One day, the owner came up from Miami (they
had a chain of them) and we talked (incidentally, a
cool, socially conscious guy... and a serious Mac
head!). He informed me that they made most of their
money from clothing, and that the computers were
actually a hinderance (!), so it was nice to have
their own on-site tech (moi). The thing is, the
computers would live on the shelves for two weeks,
then get marked down 50%, then tossed. I can't tell
you how many cool computers I ended up with (all gone
now; I love divorces).
On a related subject. Have any of you out there who
like to refurb these wonderful machines found that
it's getting harder and harder to find homes for them?
I'm certainly running into that situation up here. I'm
geting ready to return to Florida and need to find
homes for some more machines, and just can't. People
want internet ready machines, and preferably PC's.
Even people who say they want them for purely
educational usage have raised the requirements,
seeming to imply, to me at least, "if this computer
can't run IE or play Doom ver *, then I don't really
need it that much." Sad, really...

Befuddled,
Rob

Happy 4th!
