It was me not adding the Libraries to the project that caused the problem I
needed to add the ANSI library and the OOPS library.

I was following the person.c example from a hypercard stack, I have now got
it compiling and I have accumulated a fair amount of Macintosh development
documentation so there should be no excuse now!
