From what I could gather the Diskless systems use custom boot proms in the
network cards to boot from the remote server, much like in the old days of
PC's, so all the 'useful trickery tm' would be in the firmware of the prom.
The Sonic system uses a special PROM but the boot mechanism is just a variation on BootP, like NetWare RPL. There are a few documents on the Sonic site that describe how to set up Diskless Mac but the config files look pretty basic. Any intelligence about boot drive swapping must emerge after the PROM has done its business.
If anyone sees any Sonic Diskless Mac stuff for sale, please give me a heads up. The only UK site that appears to have used is is one of the Sheffield Universities.
