In their time, they were made to remain on 24 hours if need be.

Now, more than a dozen years after their heyday, I recommend shutting them
off when not in use.

A lot of wear-and-tear has occurred after all this time. Some replacement
parts are readily available. Some are not. To preserve your Compacts to
remain operable as long as possible, don't let them stay on for extended
periods of time.
