I just tried this with a 10.2.8 iBook and a 7.1 SE/30. In OS X, you have to turn AppleTalk on in both System Preferences-Network and Utilities-Directory Access. In 7.1, you have to upgrade your File Sharing Extension to version 7.6.2 which comes with System 7.5.3. Then it works just fine. There may be other wrinkles with Panther (I only had Jaguar available). It is not convenient for me to check the other direction (7.1 client to X), but the sharepoints program (www.hornware.com) and this web site may help: http://www.euronet.nl/users/mvdk/osx.html (System 6 Heaven). That's the symptom if you don't upgrade the File Sharing Extension in 7.1. -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
