Also the mount command from the terminal will show volumes are mapped to what devices. I can't test any of this because I don't have a floppy drive on my OS X machine, but I would place a formatted mac disk into the drive take note of the device name using mount and then umount (via the terminal and not by ejecting it) the device, if the OS doesn't eject the disk you should then be able to dd the file (you may need to sudo).
