I wish somebody would update MacTCP so it would work with a DHCP server.

The unofficial patches for MacTCP solve a number of problems with proxy servers. Unless you have problems with your service provider, however, I'd recommend MacTCP 2.0.6 for Macs that can't support Open Transport.

That's never going to happen.

Unless Apple release the source code for MacTCP. Which is never going to happen, alas.

IIRC MacTCP supports BootP. DHCP supports BootP although it can be
turned off in some DHCP servers. And it may not work well or at all
in MacTCP.

BootP works well with MacTCP if a properly configured DHCP/BootP server is on the same subnet as the client. IIRC you may need to enable BootP forwarding (not default) on routers on larger networks. BootP is a subset of the DHCP so DHCP servers should respond to BootP requests. Unfortunately RFC standards are not observed by the manufacturers of consumer level DHCP servers and, in the real world, MacTCP does not work with most DHCP servers. BootP may start to work properly with consumer level DHCP servers if PXE (remote boot standard for PCs) takes off, but don't hold your breath.
