While I'm not sure what the "best" compact Mac would be for this
application, I can safely say that I run my Mac Classic II continuously for
up to weeks at a time without powering it down, and it never gets more than
slightly warm to the touch. I have also never had any problems with it-- to
this day.

In the same vein, if I keep my Mac Plus (uses a very similar analogue board
to the 512k) on for even a couple hours it gets very hot on the side of the
analogue board. I've also had to replace the board once, though it was just
this year. (I've owned the Plus since circa 1994 or 1995, but it has been in
the family since it was bought new in 1988). I also have a fan installed on
the Plus, but it still doesn't run even close to the cool temperature of the
Classic II.

Anyway, I think you'll be relatively safe with most later compact Macs. But
you have to remember that *all* compact Macs are getting old at this point
in time... Just my two cents.
