Today I was out hitting the thrift shops, looking for Mac stuff, and found several good items (much more than usual, my wife's going to kill me!)
One item I found was a Personal LaserWriter 300, for $7.50 US. I got it home, hooked it up to my SE/30, installed the driver in the chooser, and after I installed the correct driver in the Chooser, it printed a page for me. Much to my surprise, it was actually readable. I don't think I've ever bought a printer at a thrift store that had a working cartridge before. Now I've got a few questions about this machine (if anyone has a better list for me to visit, I'll gladly take my questions there). This is the first laser printer I've ever owned, so apologies if this is common knowledge to the rest of the list. For starters, the printed pages have a smudge about 2/3 of the way across the page, running top to bottom. After about ten pages, it appears to be less noticeable than the first page. I assume this a dirty roller. What would be the best thing to clean this with? If I'm on the right track with this being a roller problem, and it can't be cleaned, can it (they) be replaced? I seem to recall a place mentioned on this list that sells replacement parts, and has instructions for installing them as well. (fixyourprinter.com?) Second, about 4" from the left, there seems to be "light spot" on the printed text. It's not terrible, but it is there. Any ideas as to why? Third, this printer came with a user's guide, but no software. The chooser driver installed doesn't allow me the normal options like print quality, number of copies, etc., so I'm thinking I'm missing something. A look at Apple's "Older Software Downloads" created more questions than answers. Can some kind soul please tell me what software I need. This could quite be a System software thing, as it's been at least a year since I've had a printer hooked up to this SE/30, and it may be time to reinstall 7.1.
