If that drive is good, you should have no trouble getting it to work with the Plus.
Things to check:

1) Make sure that you've terminated it properly (only first and last devices should
have terminations).
2) Make sure that the external supply is providing termination power. The Plus does
*not* supply this power. So, if you haven't set jumpers on the drive to get TP from
the external power supply,
you'll get symptoms of precisely the type you describe (i.e., works in a later model
mac, but not with the Plus).
3) This should not be an issue with a drive as modern as yours, but if you still can't
get it to work after 1) and 2), use a utility like HDT to make sure that "Unit
Attention" is disabled. The
Plus is uniquely sensitive to this drive parameter. Drives typically ship with UA
disabled as a default, but maybe someone, somewhere along the way re-enabled it for
some reason.
4) Another thing to try is to make sure that you've installed a driver appropriate for
that era. Some modern drivers are too large to load, apparently (my guess; could be
way off base here). HD SC
Setup 7.3.5 (can be patched to recognize non-Apple drives) will install a
Plus-compatible driver.

Good luck!
