My first compact Mac, a Classic II, was given to me gratis in 1996 by a fellow geek buddy. It had been given to him, and he had no use for it.
It was in sad shape: the poor little thing had just been through a trailer fire ...one corner was melted in the front upper side (nothing like the tortured one in the eBay pix ...just a "melt mark" distorting the fit), and the beige colour was forever gone (the cables and keyboard were similarly discoloured). The heat and smoke were bad enough, but the firefighters had also gotten fire retardant spray all over and through the thing. It smelled to high heaven of smoke. Anyways, I took it apart. Soaked EVERYTHING in a pail of warm soapy water for a day or so, and then scrubbed it down as best I could. Drained it, and let it air dry for several days, before putting it all back together. There was a boing, and ...IT BOOTED! To the little Mac with the question mark in the middle. Stunning ...almost unbelievable to an old PC guy like me. Well, the hard drive was dead, and so I ended up replacing that, and installing a new operating system. The floppy drive was a little the worse for wear, but it soldiered on for a couple of years before it finally gave up the ghost. I still have it (and it was working just fine the last time I checked; these days, the SE30 is my primary classic, so the C2 mostly lives in a soft case) ..and it still smells slightly of smoke. The classic Macs are indeed tough little boxes! <http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=159&item=226468278 9> --- brandon davis --- -- sacramento, ca -- -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
