Thank you Stuart. While I can guarantee it *is* hooked up to my Classic II,
I feel a bit guilty about posting this here as the issue I'm having surely
has nothing to do with the Classic itself but rather the printer.

I bought the printer quite a while ago from a local thrift store for a
whopping $3. The printer seems to be in excellent condition and seems to be
operating normally except for one thing. Also know that I *do* know the
principles on how laser printers work...

When printing a page, there is a light grey smudging or shadowing effect
around any printed text or graphic. Kind of looks like the image or text is
a little "out of focus". I don't know how really to describe it other than
it looks as if a small bit of ink/toner powder isn't all getting fused to
the page in the right place. The effect is most noticable in the middle of
the page getting lighter the farther you go towards either side of the page.
Also, on the back of every printed page, are marks that look like they have
been left by the rubber rollers that feed the paper through the printing
process. They seem to follow the same pattern as the 'smudging' on the
front in that they are darkest in the middle and fade out eventually to
nothing as you get closer to the sides of the page. I don't know if this is
at all related to what's happening on the front side of the page, but I
thought I'd mention it.

Also note that the smudging/shadowing effect that happens on the FRONT of
the page only happens in areas where there are graphics or text being
printed, unlike the "roller" effect on the BACK that happens regardless of
what is being printed on the front. Also, changing the 'print density' to
be higher makes the smuding/shadowing effect on the front to appear more
pronounced than if I turn it down. Again, the effect on the back of the
pages doesn't seem to change.

I took the printer apart at one point and cleaned all the rollers that I
could see and get to, but it had no effect. I don't care as much about the
patterns on the back of the page, but the blurry effect on the front gets
very annoying, especially on printed pages that are full pages of text.
This is the first laser printer I've ever owned, but I've used *many*
between work and school and never seen anything quite like this.

Its also worth mentioning that it looks like the toner cartridge might be
getting low... I have been hoping that simply getting a new toner cartridge
will fix this problem, but I'd like some insight from someone who might have
had this problem before and could at least tell me what's going on.

Thanks,
  Nat
