Hmm.
Decided another clear-out of duplicate compacts was called for, and pulled an SE/30 off the shelf with 'No HD' scrawled on the side by the previous owner. Plan to clean up, check out and sell on eBay. Booted from 7.5 Network Access Floppy fine - screen very clear and very 'non-jittery'. Nice.
Opened her up to find an early HD installed, not working. LocalTalked to my Duo 2300, and tried a few formatters. No joy. Disconnected SCSI and power leads to HD, and connected same to a 160Mb SCSI drive from stock, hanging off the back of the SE/30. Formatted and copied across the former contents of an SE/30 I used to own, with System 6 and a few nice apps. Rebooted from HD - all fine.
Logic board out, drive cage out, HD out, new HD in, firmly tightening the two screws that hold it, because the distance between pairs of mounting screws is different with newer HDs, of course.
Power on. Dead. Nill. Not even a rotating fan. Waited a while. Disconnected HD, applied power. OK. Re-connected HD - the new one, of course, which I'd just formatted and written a nice System 6 plus apps to. Power on. Dead.
Went to bed. Got up. Tried again. Still dead. New PSU (a/b out - in routine, of course). Power on. Dead. Disconnected HD. Power on. Dead. Had lunch. Power on. Boots! Check old PSU on meter - voltages all OK.
Clearly, the HD was taking out the PSU, which eventually would recover and start supplying current again, if the HD was disconnected. BUT, it had worked fine hanging off the back of the Mac.
Then the penny dropped: the standard screws that Apple had used to mount the original HD were too long to use safely with the new HD, the PCB of which was very close to the side member of the HD chassis, into which I'd firmly screwed the mounting screw. It had screwed its way into the edge of the PCb about 0.1", but enough to cause havoc.
AAAAARRRRGHGGGGGHHHHHH!
Let this embarrassing and sad tale be a warning to you all; even the 'right' screws can be the 'wrong' screws at times.
Stuart (now re-installing on a 500Mb SCSI!)
