i was just wondering if there was some mac boot diskette (mac os or other) that would boot up to a command line interface with a basic word processor with save function that primarily is used as a serial terminal? unless im mistaken, isnt localtalk some form of serial?

Easier than guessing what your use is, your stuck with running MacOS to use these though. Localtalk is a protocol available to macs across serial connections used to mount the share points of another mac

also, what is a suitable linux to run on a mac LC II?

What do you class as suitable? If you dont mind CLI you have Debain. Jags House has a good walkthrough here.... http://www.jagshouse.com/Linuxm68k.html

Unix, you have NetBSD http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/mac68k/
I haven't played with either for some time, personally, without a set task its a waste of time and an exercise in frustration. I'm sure you'll make up your own mind rather than take my word.

Both will do GUI which is slowww, again something you should make your own mind up about. Pick a basic desktop manager first and work up.

If you have another Nix box you might find a X-server client like Exodus useful, you connect to the Nix box and run programs on that box from the mac. For example I've run OS9.1 and Windows ME on a quadra in this fashion. The ethernet connection is the greatest bottle neck in this process. Works very well for most things like Mozilla, Open Office and Gimp ect. With Pearpc working I should now be able to have Panther running on the 68k's monitor. :) No hacking required.

btw, im new. ive mostly been a lurker, but now i had a question so i posted...

I hope you find an answer to suit your needs.
Answers like "It's a MAC! Macs don't need no stinkin' terminal!" are hardly useful or true, I notice both no emoticon or anyone complaining so I guess there's one rule for me and one for everyone else.
Such is life.
