A router will complicate the situation that much more. The surest way to 
make AppleTalk work on a LAN is to connect the devices with a dumb hub. 
Another wire from the hub can go to the router. But AppleShare will be 
very difficult to get working if all you have are an SE and a OS X 
machine.

I've never heard of that program. The one piece of software that must 
recognize your card is the driver for the card. Finding the right driver 
can be tricky, but I'm fairly certain that the one for your card came 
with it. The driver must be installed into the System; if you load a 
fresh System you must install the driver again.

With the driver installed, open your Network control panel. If the 
available devices include something that starts with "ether", then the 
driver is recognizing your card. If you can select the "ether" device 
without getting "an error occurred", then the driver and hardware are 
sensing your cable and something on the other end of the cable.

That selects your cabling (RJ-45/Coax). Sometimes the labelling is very 
faint, and I have seen some where trial and error is the only way to 
figure it out. If there is an LED near the sockets that can help.
