Hi all -
I brought home another orphan tonight, an SE/30 which I think is called an 8/80. Anyway, it powered up okay but didn't recognize the hard drive. So I booted from floppy to make sure it would (boot), and then swapped out the drive for a 360 Mb, cleaned the interior out, and installed System 7.1. So far, so good.
The only other problem I can see with this machine is that the video is a little flakey. It's only bright enough if you turn the level all the way up, and it had occasional jitters or flutters, slight jumps in size or position. Nothing consistent, but noticeable. My first thought was failing caps in the power supply or analog board. Then I wondered whether just tweaking the pots on the analog board slightly might help. Haven't broken the box back open to try that yet. Any comments on those ideas, or other suggestions?
A larger question: If this is indeed a failing analog/video board or power supply, is it possible to just pull the SE/30 logic board and pop it into a functioning SE, or use SE parts to rebuild the SE/30? Are their parts interchangeable?
Thanks -
Tim
