I'm pretty sure that selecting 400Kb ensures MFS format. 800Kb can be
either.

Stuart

800Kb can be either? I'm puzzled. How come I did use those 400k disks
(remember the "animated icons"?) with OS 5 and 6 without a glitch when they
presumably used a different file system? 400k and MFS go together well, but
can, say, an SE with 6.0.3 read a 400k MFS floppy? If so, would it (by some
software trick) see it as a single-side-written 800k HFS floppy?

Doubtful, OM

Actually, Stuart is right that the MFS format can handle 800K (double-sided) disks, but I think only very rarely would anyone want to do it. I think the only reason anyone would need to would be if they had installed an 800K drive into a 128K or a 512K machine without upgrading the logic board, which is possible with later versions of the 800K drives. Larry Pina covers this in _Macintosh Repair and Upgrade Secrets_, p. 192 (to avoid confusion note that "128K ROMs" came with the Mac 512Ke and Mac Plus--the original Mac and the Mac 512K came with 64K ROMs):

"Older models of the 800K drive won't boot unless 128K ROMs are installed. Newer models boot fine with any version of the ROMs. You can even install an 800K drive (part # 661-0345) in a 128K Mac and it'll work fine. You'll have twice as much MFS disk storage as before, ..."

There are some problems with this--the main one being you can't use an external 400K drive with it (see Pina, pp. 193-194).

But yes, Disk Copy 4.2 running on System 6.0.x can read/write/format both 400K MFS and 800K HFS disks with no problem. I don't think it will let you format an MFS disk as 800K, but it can read such a disk just fine. To do that I think you need the above configuration. But I could be wrong about that. I don't think it's a limitation of the system--I think it's a limitation of the Disk Copy application.
