Now I've dedicated some time into reclaiming my youth. I haven't used a classic Mac OS in nearly 20 years, since I was in high school. My family had an upgraded 512k running as a Plus and Dad was a trailblazer in "TeleCommuting" to work with it. Just this week I've gotten a hold of a compact mac again, a Classic II. I've spent the week figuring out how to download disk images to the PC and write them to mac format 1.44 diskette (since none of my macs have a floppy drive). I've unearthed a pair of 4mb, 30 pin SIMMs for the little guy to max out his RAM to 10mb. I've wiped the 80mb HDD and loaded (and loaded and loaded) him up to System 7.5.5 and even added some neat Control Strip modules. Now I'm ready to see if he can be networked.

Got to love those control-strip modules. :)
Funny how the pc still comes in handy, better still if its running linux or Basilisk II and your compact/vintage collection is ethernet equipped. Linux is handy for the new world machines.
I'd suggest Mandrake as you can install it on both mac or pc, there are others that do this, mdk just seems friendlier.

What I want to do is to network him into my home network via TCP/IP over ethernet. I've looked around and it seems the best bet is to find an Asante SCCI to Ethernet adapter to hook him in 10bT. If I can get to that first stage, I want to see about using Netscape 2.0 to surf the web. I need to know if this is possible over ethernet. I can't seem to find an definitive answer as most of the web pages I find that attempt to answer web questions date to the Mosaic via modem days ;-)

If you use a scsi-ethernet adapter you will need to have the 'Network' control panel loaded as this is used as a chooser and is where you find and select the adapter for use, my guess is any adapters software would install/activate it.

My adapter is used on a 68000 Classic Mac so I cant comment on the speed of the thing. :) It works well compared to a modem or localtalk/iprouter solution on the same little mac. Speed is better than dialup at @14k, burst, surfing, it doesn't surf long enough to give you a fair description of the adapters use. Its as reliable as the mac its connected to.

There are more than one brand/type of adapter, mine was sent to me by a english gentleman who lurks on this list, "thank you!!" I lost the persons posts but would like him to contact me.

Anybody have any advice, some good "How-To's" or even a good belly laugh at my feeble attempts? Any wisdom on the subject would be appreciated.

Advice? buy a adapter.

How-To's, you should find Mosaic ones relevent, if you haven't already look around Gamba's site http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/ which should be a little more help,
then there's the Pickles page found at http://macfaq.org/index.shtml I'll use the capital to denote the name, ahh the good old days. The lists contributed to the FAQ.
Jags house is where I feel you may have started, http://www.jagshouse.com/ is a wonderful resource for many things, you have to dig a little.

Nothing feeble in what I read, I have 3 doa Classic II's all have died from battery neglect. If you mac doesn't keep time/date replace the battery. The battery powers pram (like bio's settings memory) when the mains are unplugged.

Wisdom: the footer at the end of all posts to the list contain a fair archive of the traffic on the list and can answer many questions.
I have none for I am a *clueless*. LOL

Suss, http://mac.the-underdogs.org/ as I feel you will have a easier time reclaiming your youth. The site does take time to load from here.

Sorry for the ramble.
