I would also like to know the answer as I'm in the middle of a nostalgia kick so I'm fixing up old Macs and someone just gave me a Newton. It's the original one.
Also can I telnet into OSX with the Newton?
I tried telnetting in with the Classic I fished out of the trash but all I
can seem to do is send gibberish back and forth. :)

My SE30 also has these types of connectors, one is labeled as the modem and the other is a printer. I suspect that the modem is actually a serial port, right? Now the real question is, does anyone know the pinout of the serial port? Or how about the Newton serial port? I bet it is a pretty standard thing, but I haven't been able to find anything yet.
