Firstly....'tis not mine, but am curious of the history of this...interesting?
It was before Windows 1.0 premiered, although after it was announced (there's been a two-year gap between these events, which is an interesting story in itself), and Bill Gates was then a strong supporter of the Mac.
As far as I remember, Multiplan from Microsoft was one of the first Macintosh apps. It looked way better than its text-based PC equivalent, and got a lot of rave reviews. Later, Excel was also available first on a Mac, and only later ported to Windows. First PC Excel editions (2.x) were bundled with a Windows 2.x runtime (many apps of that time were), and it is believed that it was their success that made Microsoft bet everything on Windows and start treating it more seriously. Microsoft broke the OS/2 deal with IBM, and launched Windows 3.0, the first real PC GUI breakthrough.

A year after that, Bill Gates appeared in printed ads of another computer, Tandy 2000, this time praising its compatibility with Windows.
