Ian, do you have an idea of what you expect the software to do? That's what you should determine first; do you need just a flat-file database (how many data sets should it be able to handle, how many fields do you need?) or are you going for something bigger (relational DB)? Should it be able to export data in specific formats (mail merging, billing)? There are lots of old battle horses out there that would fit on two or three diskettes (I'm talking about 800k) that I tried on my SE back then. Stay away from dBase Mac, it was the sluggiest thing I've ever seen. FoxBase was fast, but I remember some nasty crashes. Any old version of FileMaker should do the job nicely. For really small requirements, there is still MiniFiler, a 456k free app by Brüning&Everth, the makers of RagTime. And in the end, your best bet may be a small integrated program like Ragtime or ClarisWorks 4. YMMV, especially keep in mind that older DB applications may not be Y2k compliant or that they may require additional software updates (e.g. FileMaker Pro 4 needs OpenTransport 1.2).
