The special tools are only needed to adjust the contrast control if you want it to be the exact value Apple wants it. For geometry, all you need is a measuring tape :-) . Adjust the width and height controls until the image measures about 7.1" by 4.75". Then center the image using the horizontal and vertical center controls. After that, display a test pattern (the 50% gray desktop pattern is great for this) and adjust the focus control until you get an overall good sharpness. You may find it usefull to set the focus control so the sharpest zone is a ring about 2" away from the center of the screen. About the contrast control, you only need to adjust if you have to move the software brightness control too far up to be comfortable (lets say over the 6 or 7). Just make sure not to put the contrast control near the limit - that will shorten CRT's life. And, anyway, if you have to raise too much the contrast control to get a decent image, it may mean that you need a new CRT or that you have a problem in the analogue board. > Also, this may sound a little silly, but I also used > to have a Mac Classic as well, and when I chose the > shutdown command, the shutdown message would appear > instantly, but I've noticed with my Classic ][ is that > the screen completely blanks out, then the shutdown > command appears, is this normal, or is it a sign that > there might still be something wrong, or I'm I just > being paranoid? It may be well because your Classic II is running a later System version than your Classic I. I have a "Classic I/II" (a complete Classic I and a spare Classic II logic board that I switch in and out, so both "computers" share all devices, including the analogue board, the CRT and the hard drives). When I shut down the Classic I, which runs 6.0.7, it powers down almost instantly. When I shut down the Classic II, which runs 7.6.1, it takes him a few seconds to show the "Now it's safe to tur off your Macintosh." The same happens with the boot time: from the "Welcome to Macintosh" screen to an usable Finder, 8 seconds in the Classic I and near one minute on the Classic II. That's why many of us love System 6 :-) . Greetings, Antonio Rodríguez (Grijan) <ftp://grijan.cjb.net:21000/> -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
