My broadband "modem" hooks into a Linksys router/hub. Yours can too (likely, it
may have to, depending upon how your provider assigns IP addresses).

Here's a pix of a Linksys router on eBay: http://tinyurl.com/68oab ...this
particular Linksys model will work with your Classic II (and it will likely
work
with any classic that can run System 7 and MacTCP), and as a bonus, is also a
four port hub. (The Linksys also acts as a firewall/gateway, DHCP server, &
uses
NAT, so it offers a modicum of security to home networks ...CHANGE THE FACTORY
DEFAULT PASSWORD ...sorry for "shouting" ...pretty simple to use, and you can
administer it via http through any browser.) I've seen a couple of complaints
about Linksys routers (although I think that may have been the wireless
version), but I've had zip-zero-nada problems in the four plus years (24 hours
a
day, 7 days a week, always on) I've been using one (I'd buy another).

I use a Linksys to connect - trouble free - both an SE30 and a Colour Classic 2
"Mystic" mod to the web (I use NetTime, the occasional light browsing, and
light
email on both boxes). The SE30 runs System 7.1.3, and the CC2 is running 7.5.3
..both are using MacTCP (I don't use Open Transport ...no particular reason,
but no need to change from MacTCP). The Macs coexist with various Windows (from
W31 to XP) and Linux boxes, all sharing the same router connection to the
Internet. No problems.

I *did* use a Classic II "just like yours" at one point (and also an SE
w/accelerator board). You will have to set a static IP address on your classic
..note that I connect both through a "regular" 10BaseT hub PRIOR to connecting
to the Linksys btw (I do recall some people mentioning that there might be
problems if you use a 10/100 switching hub ...sorry, no experience with
wireless; but I can't imagine *that* working with System 7).

As Stuart mentioned, you will need an external Ethernet "solution" with the
Classic II (as the internal slot is just for a math co-processor card
..although I seem to recall coming across someone once who said they'd seen an
accelerator for it; I wouldn't bother looking - I've never seen one). I've used
a scsi-to-ethernet adapter (an older Daynaport) on the SE and the Classic II
with System 7.

NOTE: THERE USED TO BE A LINK TO A DIAGRAM IN THIS SPOT!

Here's a pix of a newer Daynaport on eBay (these show up on eBay quite often):

And here's a link to the Daynaport archive at Intel:
http://support.intel.com/support/dayna/

I think there's also AppleTalk-to-Ethernet adapters that might work, but I've
no
experience with those.

And of course your System 8.6 clone would work just fine.

..I don't know either of the sellers I pointed to on eBay; you're on your own
with those.

..no experience with System 6 connectivity either, so I'm no help there.

As far as "functional" software goes: I'll try and come up with a list on a
follow-up post, if the thread lives for awhile. (I still consider the SE30 &
CC2
Mystic as "working machines", as detailed in a post nominally about
accelerators
a few weeks back ...though as Internet machines, they're only marginally
effective.)

PS - Again, thanks for all your patience in putting up with my "experiment".
And
a last followup: purposefully misspelling the URL didn't work, either. Neither
did using a "tinyurl" link. I finally deleted a direct link, after *FIVE MORE*
bounces. No more pee-aitch-pee's I s'pose. Sheesh.

I have an old Mac Classic II from my office working at home now. It's a beauty
of simplicity - too bad OS X isn't this nice. I have Word and Excel installed.
I'm not a game player. Does anyone have any suggestions for cool, functional
things that I can do with my Mac? Can it be hooked up to Verizon DSL (in spite
of the fact that they don't seem to support anything under OS X? I have a Mac
clone that I'd like the same advice with, running on OS 8.6.

It should be no problem with 7.5.x. The problem with the Classic II is the
absence of a slot to out a network card in.

I'll be watching the answers to this one. Finally picked up an SE/30 and have
an ethernet card on the way. Hoping to eventually add it to my little Airport
network but would like it on the DSL connection even if I have to run a wire
across the room.
