Discussion of this problem has come up before. From what I remember, the
problem was attributed to aged PROM batteries. Certainly replacing the PROM
battery on various Compact and pizza-box Macs I've worked with has cleared
up problems resolved by "turning it off and quickly back on." Suggestion was
that the quick power recycle allowed some necessary capacitors to gain
enough charge to support the second, successful boot. Never had problems
that I could trace to leaking capacitors or that had associated "funny
smells." Have you had any problems, such as loss of date/time, that would
indicate a venerable PROM battery? BTW: and slightly OT, pizza-box Macs that
can utilize the soft power switch on the keyboard need to remain plugged in
to trickle-charge the PROM batteries, or they will discharge, and much more
rapidly than in their compact brothers.

Regards,
        Al D.

Subject: SE30 Startup Trouble

Someone... believe it was on this list... recently described
difficulty starting his SE30. Said it presented horizontal lines
while booting and said he would get past that by turning it off and
quickly back on.

Mine presents horizontal line static while starting. If it let it go
it finishes with "The Bomb" inside a dialogue box. No dialogue, just
the bomb. A quick off and on with the power switch gets a successful
restart.

So....... What causes that? A cockroach napping on the video board?
Honey that dripped onto the board in years past? Should I start
shopping for a new machine?

Aloha,

Richard
