Well, I took it apart to take the pictures, and put it back together. I turned it on out of curiosity. (Pretend this is italicized) It booted!!! (OK, you can stop pretending now :-P ) I don't know why, but this happened when I first got it back in June 2004. It had a Sad Mac each time you turned it on, and after I opened it and put it back together (Wanted to see what it looked like), it worked!

The floppy drives are almost impossible to get a diskette in. You really have to jam the disk in, but anyway, it works.

Could there be any explanations for this?

Hmmm ... sorry to tell you they don't help much, but the high voltage lead
looks awfully moldy. Though I don't think that would produce a dead unit by
itself. Glad you have the Pina book, that should tell you about all you need
to know, but you're gonna have to get your hands dirty and pull it apart.
Maybe all that needs to happen is the various connectors need to be reseated
or other wiggling around of things to bring it back to life. Otherwise, get
your multi-meter and start testing! Too bad the SE power supply is covered
in the Mac II upgrade and repair secrets. Perhaps someone else on the list
has a quick method to determine if its a bad power supply. But if it was
working when you put it in the basement, I find it hard to believe that it
just went bad. Most likely heat or humidity related failure.
