On this topic...I have several compacts with good CRTs and bad cases, and several with vice versa. How hard is it to remove the CRT HV cable and swap the CRTs? I've torn down several compacts and never attempted to do so.

It can be fairly time-consuming, but it is pretty straightforward to move a CRT from one case to another. Just discharge it, be careful to not break the glass, and take your time. It's easier in a Plus than it is in an SE or SE/30, just as 1960s cars are easier to work on than are 1990s cars, but it is definitely doable.
