"Better"? No. Cleaner, simpler, clearer, more keyboard-operable, faster, yes. Better? No. Better means an overall complete improvement. The Explorer interface has greater depth, greater flexibility, greater customisability, is more discoverable and is more like canonical iconic GUIs such as MacOS, GEM, Intuition, RISC OS and so on. Overall I much prefer it. For its easy but deep tweakability and its keyboard controls, it's probably still my favourite in the world, tho' Classic MacOS comes close, especially by OS 9. The simplicity and elegance of the way that the Apple menu & the Start menu are edited - by making aliases/shortcuts in a folder tree - makes the KDE and GNOME menu editors look like pathetic, tragic cock-ups. And IIRC Apple copied this off MS after Win95, not the other way around. I /wish/ OS X had the Classic Finder, Carbonized & long filename capable, *as well as* the NeXT workspace columnar filer, as 2 essentially separate programs, as the tree-view single-window Explorer and the multiwindow disk view are in Windows, or the tree and folder views are completely distinct in the OS/2 WPS. > And I agree with you on that as well. Linux changes *quickly*; BSD, glacially, by comparison. > But, again, we were discussing interface design and > aesthetics. They are all shared between all the free Unices. -- Liam Proven Home: http://welcome.to/liamsweb * Blog: http://lproven.livejournal.com AOL, Yahoo UK: liamproven * ICQ: 73187508 * MSN: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
