I bought a Newton 120. I really know nothing about them but I looked this model up in Mactracker and the operating system listed was 1.3 or 2.0. From this information, I thoght you could upgrade. Baseed on what you told me, do you think they changed the operating system sometime during production?

Thanks for responding.

Steve

They did change the NOS during production, they came with a 1.3 ROm or a 2.0 ROM. There are some updates for each tha tyou can download but its not possible to upgrade from 1.30 to 2.0 without a ROM switch. If you have a 1.3, it's limiting for network stuff. If you have a 2.0, it's still pretty limiting for network stuff. Spare ROMs are made of unobtainium but you can transplant one from a dead MP120/2.0 if you get one on ebay or whereever.

For limited internet use, you need a MP130 (OS 2.0) but for best effective use you need a 2100 (OS 2.1). A 120 /2.0 can do some serial P and limited email, but it's a bit hard- heap space is quite limited. that said, I did make it work, sort of, for a while. For a stand-alone PDA, it would be fine.

See <http://www.chuma.org/newton/faq/newton-faq-software.html#VD> for some OS and internet info.
