Thanks for your response.  So if I get an external 1.4meg floppy drive and a
newer machine, it will be able to read the data off the 800k floppy? Will I
have a problem with the OS or are they all backward compatible?

Several options.

If you can get the floppy to work, archive the data the as many
floppies as it takes.

If there is another Mac around with serial ports, connect that
way and transfer the data via file sharing and AppleTalk.

If you have an external SCSI Hard Drive, connect it and move
the data to the SCSI drive. Of course, you will need another
Mac with a SCSI port in order to retrieve the data.

Many other options, but I have used these (I have a garage
full of old Macs and peripherials).

If all else fails, send the hard drive out of the SE to a kind
soul and have them install it in another machine or external case
and burn the data to CD. (I have done this for a few other folks).
