I think I may have found its source. Although the /etc/gconf/schemas/gwd.schemas file exists, gconf-editor does not see appropriate entry. As a result, invoking gconftool-2 -s /apps/gwd/use_metacity_theme -t bool true probably causes some conflicts that prevent metacity theme from working properly. The question is why is the scheme invisible to gconf...
