I am running metacity version 1:2.27.0-0ubuntu3 and I am still affected by the bug. When I log in, the gconf setting for /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager is false, but metacity is running and compiz is not. I had been running compiz flawlessly until a few days ago when it crashed and Desktop effects could not be enabled from System -> Preferences -> Appearance. I tried restarting the computer and it still didn't work, but I can run compiz --replace and it works flawlessly.
