Thanks Travis Watkins, if I use Options >Select Session > Failsafe
GNOME, I can log in as the new user. When I do this, though, System
>Preferences >Appearance > Visual Effects tab is already set to None.
How can I make it "stick" for regular "GNOME" or "Run Xclient script"
sessions? Is there a file that stores the Visual Effects settings from
session to session?

Otherwise, I have to keep selecting Failsafe GNOME at log in time, as
it does not seem to remember it as the default.
