Confirmed for Karmic 9.10 on an ASUS EEE PC 1000h with Intel GMA 950. Happens exactly as described (both screens turn black with mousepointer frozen near in-between) when either pressing Fn+F8 shortcut combo or opening Preferences > Display.
Only seems to happen, when trying to ACTIVATE the external screen. It doesn't seem to affect deactivating it.
