This worked for me in Ubuntu 9.10... Go to System > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager... in the General Options keep the GNOME compatibility checked but also check KDE Compatibility.... after that Alt+F2 worked for me... i got the run command window... I hope this works... XD.
