I hope I am not confusing things here ... My lucid 32 bit system (up to date) suffered from the same problem. I'm creating presentations for my lectures so it's a bit silly not being able to use a true fullscreen presentation mode.
Now, I decided to remove the Ubuntu version of OO3.2 and installed the debs for OO3.2 from the OO website. These seemed to work in conjunction with compiz.
