Many compiz features (the ring-switcher, for example) allow you to abort your action with the escape key. My keyboard layout options include the option to treat the CapsLock key as an additional escape. (System -> Preferences -> Keyboard -> Layouts -> Options... -> CapsLock key behavior -> Make CapsLock an additional ESC).
