I see the same issue, but it only occurs in ~25%-50% of boot ups on my old laptop (Dell D800). I use an Nvidia geforce4 4200go with 32 mb integrated memory and the recommended Nvidia driver (the oldest one which is the one supporting this anno 2003 graphics card) . I haven't tried killing the gnome panel, or changing drivers.
