i845G and i830 run all ordinary applications, office, internet, internet video, ... without Compiz.
Blacklisting Compiz for them is just fine with me, since I usually check on install and set System Preferences Appearance Visual Effects None anyway. Of course I'm interested in running applications full screen so I don't have any interest in desktop eye candy anyway. I do note from comments on the forum others are interested in desktop eye candy. By the way, my i845G and i830 are running Mavierick Beta with i915.modeset=1, KMS active, O.K. not that I do anything with KMS or switching modes. See bug #541492.
