Yep, this seems to be a bug in compiz' multi-head functionality. The flickering/blanking when disabling the laptop LVDS may be an unrelated bug. (It is probably either the kernel KMS or an issue in gnome-display-properties.) I'd suggest filing that as a separate bug report.
